The 12 Holidays of Mallorca
1st of January New year

Though all the fiestas, even those of pagan origin, have a religious motivation, there are some, which sprang up from the beginning as a liturgical celebration. Thus, for example, the Cant de la Sibil·la (Sybil´s Song) is sung by a boy or a woman who, dressed in a tunic and armed with a sword recalls fragments of the Apocalypse at the Midnight Mass of the Seo in Palma and in the monastery of Lluc. The davallaments of Pollença (Pollensa) and Sineu are a spectacular staging of the Descent which takes place in its respective Calvaries.
As well as the usual pilgrimages, in Majorca (Mallorca) contests and meetings are held for ancient local sports and also purely pagan feasts. The revetla (a night of fiesta with bonfires as the main part), the Moros i Cristians (Moors and Christians) of Soller and Pollença (Pollensa), the carnival of Porreres -with its perfect ritual- trotting races in Capdepera and shooting competitions with catapults and poetry contests in Sant Joan and Sa Pobla, respectively, are extremely interesting spectacles.
